SETU is committed to holistic women empowerment and strives to conduct various workshops & projects to achieve this aim. Literacy, skill development and livelihood opportunities are the primary requisites to achieve women empowerment at the grass root level.
Vocational skill trainings are essential for their economic independence and self-sustainability. Trainings also boost their self-esteem and social status, promote gender equality and enhance family well-being.
And so, SETU organized a Tailoring workshop for a duration of 6 months for the underprivileged women of Sanjay Nagar. This is an urban slum area in Jaipur where many women are in need of livelihood. Some of them get temporary odd jobs like household cleaning, sweeping, cooking etc. However, such jobs are low-paying, very tough and uncertain. They also face problems of having to leave their kids unsecured while going for work, as they can neither afford crèches, nor take their kids to workplaces. SETU manages a Community Centre in the area for such women. It is a “learn cum earn” centre, where they can come for any flexible durations, learn to read & write, learn computers, and various other vocational skills. They can also bring their young kids with them to the centre. Livelihood opportunities are also provided to the women as per need.
20 women/girls successfully completed their training in the Tailoring workshop. Two trainers were appointed who taught them various processes about creating home décor products, women’s hair accessories, pouches and then finally, garments. They were taught about cutting paper patterns, design modern & attractive garments, and various sewing techniques. All sewing machines and raw materials like cloth, threads, needles, chalk, bukram/fusing, elastics & other necessary materials for creating garments were made available to them completely free of cost. Some of these women who had been making basic pouches and buntings earlier but wanted to shift to more skillful & rewarding items like salwar-suits etc. also attended the workshop.
The training progress of women was monitored from time to time by the SETU team, due to which the quality of the training workshop was maintained.
After completion of the workshop, many of these women started earning their own income by making garments etc. on piece rate basis from home, while a few started working on job basis.
