Celebrating Fair Trade Month at SETU…

The month of October is celebrated worldwide by Fair Traders as the Fair Trade Month. SETU always tries to conduct some special & meaningful activity to mark the occasion. This time we conducted a series of skill development training programs for our underprivileged women artisans engaged in making upcycled products.

The week long Training Program started from 16th of October and was organized in Jaipur for the under privileged women. These women live in slums, belong to male dominated, traditional households and are not permitted to go out of their homes to work. Poverty & ignorance force these women to live a marginalized & oppressed life. SETU had organized these women into small Self Help Groups and provided them livelihood opportunities. This was made possible by training them with vocational skills like stitching, embroidery, tassel making etc. SETU also tries to make them entrepreneurs and constantly endeavors to provide them livelihood & Marketing opportunities. This has helped the women gain economic independence and thus confidence and the power to participate in decision making in their families and support the family income.

In the skill up gradation program, 20 women artisans registered their presence. Three expert designers from SETU were appointed for the program.

The inaugural day of the training program started with an introduction to the ten principles of Fair Trade and their importance in today’s scenario. Later in the session, participants learned how to make different types of designs by using recycled raw materials. Also, women were made aware about various marketing techniques for selling the products effectively like product designs at par with the current market trend, knowledge about the target consumer market… just to name a few.
