“Pay attention to the hungry, both in this country and around the world. Pay attention to the poor. Pay attention to our responsibilities for world peace…. ” George McGovern
The UN data shows that about 815 million people in the entire world live in hunger. Out of these, 200 million people are in India alone! This means about 15% population of India still fights hunger!
Most of the people believe that hunger only affects people who are lazy or who do not want to work, but sadly, this is not the case always. Over one-fourth of the hungry people in our country are the working poor! Poor laborers, who don’t even earn enough to provide sufficient food or proper nutrition for themselves and their families. If we further look into the details, most of the people who are somehow able to fill their stomachs, severely lack nutrition and survive on food that is not even fit for the human body!
And so, about 2 months back, with the commencement of the year 2020, we have started a new Food Project, which is about hunger alleviation of the working poor. The Food project is a small step to feed the hungry & poor people. Our target beneficiaries are not beggars, but the poor, daily wage laborers who come every day from nearby villages in search of work. Many such laborers end up not getting work and they are left hungry and without any money to even commute back to their homes. Many are forced to sleep overnight on footpaths, even in winters, in the hope of getting work next day. So we are getting nutritious and wholesome food freshly made for such unfortunate people. The food includes seasonal green vegetables, lentil daals, 4 chapatis (Indian whole wheat bread) and jaggery/banana. This is distributed completely free of cost to these people. This is only a small initiative and we are currently feeding up to 75-100 people every day. This is a daily program and our target is to slowly reach up to 200 people every day. Till date ( i.e. Mid-Mar 2020), we have provided nutritious food to more than 6000 people.
The project is continuous /ongoing and every day, more & more hungry people will be fed!
