Workshop on Entrepreneurship Development, POSH laws & Social issues…
A holistic development initiative for rural women artisans…
Place: Beenjarad, Chohtan
Date: 7th March 2025
As part of our ongoing mission to empower women and foster inclusive rural development, SETU Society organized a day-long workshop in association with Society to Uplift Rural Economy (SURE), for the underprivileged women artisans of the remote rural areas of Binjarad & Chohtan, near Barmer. The workshop addressed key themes crucial for women’s social, economic, and legal empowerment. Various topics were covered in the workshop, such as Entrepreneurship development, awareness of women’s legal rights, Women’s safety laws such as POSH Act, (2013} and tackling of other prevalent social issues in their community.
Various renowned speakers addressed the workshop. Following topics were discussed and covered:
- Breaking the silence on injustice:
Women were sensitized to their constitutional and legal rights, with a strong emphasis on the POSH Act, which protects women from sexual harassment in the workplace. They were encouraged to speak up against exploitation and violence, including domestic abuse, and to seek legal redress without fear or shame.
- Strengthening social network:
The speakers highlighted the critical role of women in shaping social decisions and emphasized that empowerment begins with awareness and unity. Participants were urged to recognize their inherent strength and leadership potential, and to organize at the community level to demand their rights and bring about change.
- Education as a catalyst:
The workshop emphasized that education and awareness are essential for breaking cycles of poverty and oppression. Women were encouraged to seek knowledge not just for personal development, but as a tool for uplifting their families and communities.
- Economic empowerment through entrepreneurship development:
Participants learnt how to become financially self-reliant through entrepreneurship. The session covered topics such as modern marketing strategies, branding, use of digital platforms to sell handmade products, and how to leverage technology to reach wider markets.
- Exploring sustainable livelihoods:
Discussions included alternative income-generating opportunities, such as organic farming, livestock rearing, and value addition in traditional crafts, which can provide stable livelihoods while preserving local culture and ecology.
The workshop had participation of more than 90 rural women, many of whom actively engaged with the speakers, asked questions, and shared their personal struggles and aspirations.
Workshops like these are vital in equipping rural women with knowledge, skills, and support systems. We move a step closer to achieving gender equity and inclusive rural development. SETU remains committed to continuing such initiatives and building a just, empowered society.
