On the occasion of International Women’s Day, SETU organized a Skill Upgradation Workshop for women artisans engaged in the traditional lacquer (lac) craft of Jaipur. The initiative aimed to strengthen the livelihoods of underprivileged women artisans by enhancing their skills and introducing new design possibilities in their craft.
Around 25 women artisans, who are primarily involved in making traditional lac bangles, participated enthusiastically in the workshop. While lac bangle making is a well-known craft of Jaipur, many artisans continue to produce conventional designs with limited exposure to contemporary techniques and market trends. The workshop was therefore designed to help them upgrade their skills and diversify their product range, enabling them to access better market opportunities.
The training focused on innovative techniques of embedding zirconia and other decorative stones in lac bangles, which adds aesthetic value and makes the products more appealing to modern consumers. Participants were guided on how to place stones skillfully, maintain balance in design, and improve finishing so that their products can compete in evolving markets.
In addition to improving traditional bangle designs, the workshop also introduced artisans to the idea of creating new and functional products using lac, encouraging them to explore contemporary applications of the craft. This exposure helps artisans think beyond conventional products and adapt their skills to changing consumer preferences.
To ensure effective hands-on learning, SETU arranged two expert trainers who demonstrated techniques and guided participants throughout the training. Necessary infrastructure and materials were provided, including kilns, tools, and raw materials, allowing the artisans to practice the techniques during the workshop itself.
The workshop was highly interactive, with artisans actively experimenting with new designs and techniques. It also provided a space for participants to share experiences and learn from one another. Snacks were distributed to all participants during the session.
Through such programs, SETU continues to support women artisans at the grassroots level, helping them preserve traditional crafts while adapting them to modern markets. Initiatives like these contribute to women’s economic empowerment, skill development, and sustainable livelihoods.
