Henna (Mehndi) Competition: A Day of Art, Bonding & Empowerment…
A community development & women empowerment initiative…

SETU organized a Henna (Mehndi) competition for under-privileged women from the nearby urban slum communities: an initiative rooted in community building, women’s empowerment, and social sustainability,

What began as a small, simple activity soon blossomed into a warm, vibrant, joy-filled community moment. Women helped each other with designs, taught new patterns, fixed small mistakes, shared tips, and encouraged one another. More than 20 women participated, yet it never felt like a competition. It felt like a circle of women lifting each other up. The space filled with laughter, conversations, and creativity.

The main purpose was to increase community bonding so that they can share their problems and draw collective strength from each other in various phases of their lives.

7 prizes were awarded to the winners, but the biggest win was the confidence and happiness everyone carried back with them. The real prize was the sense of belonging and togetherness that filled the room.

These are what community building aims are:

  • Women supporting women.
  • Women discovering their talents.
  • Women finding strength in each other.

Seeing the enthusiasm and skill in today’s activity, SETU will soon start a professional Mehndi training course; opening pathways for women to earn a livelihood, especially with the upcoming wedding and festival seasons where Mehndi artists are in high demand. There is tremendous potential for sustainable income, and we want these women to be ready to seize it.

It was a simple activity with big impact, creating stronger skills, stronger bonds and stronger futures.

This was another small step towards building connections, confidence, and opportunities.
