Empowering Divyang Youth through Skill Workshops…

Place : Vadodara
Period: 10th-22nd Feb 2025

SETU had set up a workshop infrastructure, named “Happy Workshop” for the Divyang youth, in Vadodara, about 1 year back. To take this further, SETU recently sponsored a two-week long workshop for these special youth associated with the Vatsalya Foundation. The workshop focused on vocational trainings in block printing, batik, yo-yo doll making, and other decorative crafts. Through these skill-building sessions, individuals with autism gained not only practical abilities but also a sense of accomplishment and self-worth, significantly useful for enhancing their quality of life.

The workshop was initially planned for 1 week, for skill trainings of block printing & batik only. But it turned to 2 weeks with addition of more skills like sewing yo-yo dolls and coconut painting crafts.

Various trainers were involved for different skills. Ms Anjali Kotwal & Ms Kalpana Shah taught the students to handle needle & thread work, and make beautiful sewn products like yo-yo dolls, flowers, napkins & bags. Ms Smita Sahastrabudhe conducted the training of block printing. Batik art was taught to students by Ms Swati Bedekar and Mr. Shyam Bedekar. They helped students to practice simple tie and dye methods in the preparatory week. In the training week, more complicated batik was taken up. Mr. Shyam Bedekar taught students the safer “cool” method of dyeing the cloth, to avoid handling of hot water. He also developed wooden tools for pouring the wax in thin line on the cloth to create designs. These tools proved very useful in creating complex designs on cloth with thin lines.

For the trainers, it was a truly wonderful experience working with the students. The students’ enthusiasm for learning new skills was unmatched, and it was inspiring to witness their dedication. The students also realized that mastering these techniques could open up opportunities to earn a livelihood, fostering a sense of purpose and motivation when they rise every morning 😊

A valedictory session and exhibition of their creations was held on the last day. Students were distributed certificates and a cultural ceremony was also held, where the students performed very beautifully.

Such workshops are vital for Divyang youth, as, by acquiring vocational skills, these young individuals become more self-reliant and confident. Engaging in creative activities also helps improve cognitive and motor skills, promoting holistic development and mental well-being.

Beyond the technical skills, such workshops instill a sense of dignity and empathy, reminding participants that they are valued members of society. This boost in self-esteem and motivation, positively impacts their outlook on life, giving them a reason to look forward to each new day.
