Distributing Drill Machines to the Copper Bell Artisans… A capacity building initiative by SETU…

SETU Society believes in the holistic development of the artisans! Capacity building is of utmost importance when it comes to bracing up the artisans to become self-sustainable. They need to have all the essential tools & machinery and become competitive in terms of design, quality, price & productivity.

Many of our talented artisans, engaged in the making of sonorous copper bells, belong to the villages of Kutchh, namely Kunariya, Zura and Nirona. These artisans come from the Luhar community and are practicing this traditional craft form since generations…

In the Bell making process, drill machines are required to make holes in the wooden clappers that produce melodious sound. In the absence of any drilling equipment, the artisans have to depend on out-sourcing the process, which consumes a lot of time, money & energy. This is not only full of hassles, but retards the productivity significantly! SETU identified the need and provided high quality drill machines to the artisans completely free of cost!

Now, with the availability of drill machines, every artisan can do the work on their own, without depending on others. A total of 42 artisans have been provided with the free drill machines. This step will save a lot of time for the artisans and will thus improve quality & increase productivity, not to count the cost-savings.. 🙂
