World Fair Trade Day takes place on the second Saturday of May each year to bring together the fair trade movement in a global day of activation for real change. It is an inclusive worldwide festival of events celebrating fair trade’s contribution to the fight against poverty, exploitation, and climate change.
To celebrate the day, SETU organized an awareness workshop to increase understanding about the Fair Trade & ethical business concept among Blue Pottery artisans. SETU has been associated with these artisans for over a year. Traditional Blue Pottery products contain heavy amounts of lead, which may be detrimental to artisans’ health during the production processes. SETU worked with them for months together to help them develop Lead-free Blue pottery products! The artisans were quite happy and expressed that none of their buyers were ever concerned about their health & processes!.
SETU team conducted the workshop with the objective of making the artisans aware of the benefits of Fair Trade practices.
Major Points discussed in the workshop:
• The ten Principles of Fair Trade with their meanings and implications in the present scenario.
• Need for using Fair Trade and the benefits arising from it.
• How the daily remuneration of artisans is calculated in the Fair Trade Model
• The Fair Trade business Model and Motivating artisans & traders to practise Fair Trade practices.
Light was thrown on the fact that Fair Trade not only provides fair wages to the artisans but also helps in social upliftment & environmental sustainability.
Along with the SETU team, a total of 32 local artisans attended the workshop…
