Celebrating Universal Children’s Day

Venue: Apna Ghar Orphanage, Jaipur

Date: November 20, 2012

SETU realizes the worth of a million dollar smile on the face of an orphan child. To celebrate the Universal Children’s Day, SETU organized a one day program at the orphanage- `APNA GHAR’, involving around 54 girls and boys, aged 6 to 16 years.

These children are normally shy, inhibited and lack social interaction skills. But being children, as all children normally are, they are very creative and definitely love to open up to creative, playful activities. And so, we organized a fun filled activity session with these kids to unleash their inner creativity & artistic talents.

The basic aim of the program was to help these children:

• Overcome hesitation.
• Make them aware of their rights.
• Enhance their social interaction skills to bring them closer to the main stream society.
• Bring out the creative side of the kids which is essential for overall development of a child.
• Help them learn the concept of reusing & recycling.

The program started with pleasantries giving way to an interactive session with the children sharing their dreams. They were made aware of four basic children rights (as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

This was followed by the creative session, in which the kids were to create greeting cards and paintings, using recycled materials. All raw material i.e. drawing sheets, painting colors, fabric scraps, cotton balls, paint brushes, pencils, erasers, scissors, threads etc. were provided by SETU. The children got very excited just by seeing all the raw material, their eyes shone and they set out to bring out their wild imagination by engaging in the craft activity.

The recreational activity was designed to encourage learning too. Children playfully discovered the reuse of materials which are sometimes commonly discarded. They learnt to use innovative concepts in creating different textures and combinations in paintings and cards using fabric scraps, waste cotton balls, threads, etc. They also used leaves of different shapes and sizes, carved vegetable blocks etc. by dipping them in colors to further embellish their creations. Children portrayed their colorful imagination on paper in amazing ways. The activity instilled awareness on Re-cycling productivity in these kids right from their childhood which will seed a greener future.
