In this age of fast-paced technology and mass production, handcrafted products are steadily falling behind in the market, leaving many rural artisans, especially women, struggling to sustain their livelihoods. To address this challenge, SETU organized an intensive 8-day workshop, focused on skill upgradation and capacity building for rural women artisans, in collaboration with Hatheli Sansthan, Tilonia.
The workshop aimed to support and uplift over 90 women artisans from 7 nearby villages. With a focus on appliqué-based crafts and decorative accessories, the training was designed to empower artisan communities and promote ethical, sustainable livelihoods. Key objectives included:
The training focused on key areas crucial for modern markets such as; product functionality & design innovation, creativity & originality, quality enhancement & finishing, cost optimization etc. Through hands-on learning and guided mentorship, artisans explored new designs, improved their techniques, and developed products with contemporary appeal.
The impact was felt not only in the products created, but in the self-confidence of women. We could clearly see a renewed potential in many artisans to meet higher quality standards and market expectations.
This workshop represents more than just training. It was a step towards economic independence, cultural preservation, and social transformation of rural women artisans.
